Deer

Dallington Forest supports small herds of native Roe deer as well as large herds of introduced Fallow deer.

The Fallow deer put a substantial pressure on regeneration of the forest but do partly compensate for the lack of large grazing herbivores that would otherwise have maintained grassland and heathland habitats.

Small mammals

We have no data currently on the species or numbers of small mammals living in the project area, and more research is needed.

Birds

We have no data currently on the species or numbers of birds living in the project area, and more research is needed.

But we do know there is a need for more overgrown hedgrows and scrub habitat to help them with their nesting and foraging.

A local bird expert is helping us compile a species list for the forest and we intend to conduct surveys in the forest in May 2021 when the winter populatons are still present and when summer visitors will be arriving. The results will be posted here.

Reptiles

We have no data currently on the species or numbers of reptiles living in the project area, and more research is needed.
