There are a number of areas of the Dallington Forest Project that show evidence of once being heathland through the presence of Common heather Calluna vulgaris and Gorse Ulex.
Further research is needed to understand better the extent of the heathlands and their history.
Here is a report produced by the High Weald AONB to highlight the character and value of heathy woods/wooded heaths.
